This week celebrates National Apprenticeship Week and we at FPA are very proud of our two Apprentices, Joe and Steph. 


Joe’s Story : Accounting for Business

Joe's is a real success story as far as we’re concerned.   Joe was 18 when we offered him an Accounting Apprenticeship in 2008. The Apprenticeship Scheme gave Joe the opportunity to be a full time employee undertaking an established position within our energy team while at the same time learning accounting skills. We supported Joe through his college training for AAT and as soon as he passed his finals we encouraged him to look at the next level which was the CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) qualification on day release. We are pleased to report that Joe has worked hard to pass his exams and will soon be taking his 3rd year exams.


Joe says the Apprenticeship Scheme was right for him at the time because “I liked the idea of learning the theory at the same time as getting practical experience, you can see what you’re studying in your everyday work, and I like being paid while I’m studying.  His Training Advisor came in regularly to interview both him and us, check on his progress and to set tasks for completion.


At the same time as passing his qualifications Joe progressed within our business to become the Finance Assistant, carrying out the day-to-day duties to support the Finance Manager and will even be covering for the Finance Manager while she’s away on Maternity Leave later this year.


Now only 23, Joe is nearly a qualified CIMA Accountant and has gained useful experience working in an SME which will be a good grounding for his future career.   


Steph’s Story : Business Administration

Steph joined us when she was 16 after completing  her GCSE’s and is undertaking a Business Administration Apprenticeship working in a full time role within our energy division.  Steph decided to take this career path as she enjoyed business studies at school and believes it will stand her in good stead for her future in business.

Steph is currently on a Level 2 Apprenticeship and every month she has to complete a checklist of tasks, set by her Training Advisor, covering aspects such as Diversity & Equality, the Functional Skills of Maths, English and IT, and maintaining a portfolio of work. She even has to arrange meetings to analyse our business spend and see if she can reduce our cost base.


On completion of her Level 2 year Steph can decide to continue onto Level 3 if she chooses.  Steph says It’s helpful to have a structure to the modules and to be able to tick them off when I’ve done them. From leaving school to coming into a working business environment is very different, and although I felt out of my comfort zone to begin with the staff at FPA made me feel very welcome and I soon settled in. Since starting in December I feel I have grown up as an individual. I’d definitely recommend anyone to do an Apprenticeship”.

Apprenticeship Week

This is the 6th annual National Apprenticeship Week and is designed to celebrate the positive impact which a young person can have on both their own future and the bottom line of a company.  They are designed to help young people develop high quality, highly transferable skills to improve their prospects.  And get paid at the same time!

Apprenticeships have seen a 41% increase in applications over Christmas 2012 and at any point there are approx. 15000 vacancies on the National Apprenticeship Service website
